2025 CM4AI Codefest at UAB

Birmingham, AL — The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) recently hosted the 2025 CM4AI CodeFest, a national in-person event that brought together researchers, data scientists, and AI innovators to advance biomedical discovery through cutting-edge computational approaches.
The CodeFest was organized as part of the Cell Maps for AI (CM4AI) project, a cornerstone of the NIH’s Bridge2AI Consortium. CM4AI’s mission is to generate high-quality cellular maps that capture the spatiotemporal architecture of human cells, enabling interpretable genotype-to-phenotype learning and transformative applications in precision medicine.

Hands-On Exploration of AI in Biomedicine
The event provided participants with an interactive, hands-on environment to explore CM4AI datasets alongside state-of-the-art AI/ML tools. Areas of focus included:
· Biomedical graph networks
· Graph and quantum AI/ML methods
· Data embedding and visualization
· Visible neural networks
· Large language models (LLMs)
Through these avenues, participants designed and tested novel approaches to advance cancer research, drug discovery, systems biology, and precision medicine.

National Collaboration and Competition
Hosted by UAB, Yale University, and UC San Diego, the CodeFest drew more than 40 participants from across the United States. Researchers, graduate students, and industry innovators formed eight competitive teams, each tasked with developing AI-powered biomedical solutions.
The competition culminated in project showcases where teams presented their results to a panel of judges. Top-performing teams were awarded cash prizes, recognizing not only technical innovation but also the potential for real-world impact in health sciences.

Building Bridges Between AI and Medicine
Organizers emphasized that the CM4AI CodeFest was not only about competition but also about building a collaborative research ecosystem. By connecting experts across disciplines, the event accelerated the integration of AI/ML tools into biomedical research and highlighted the role of open, interpretable data in driving next-generation discoveries.
As part of the broader NIH Bridge2AI initiative, the CodeFest underscored a vision of harnessing artificial intelligence to better understand human biology and ultimately improve patient outcomes.
